Kwottenai kange or Fulani Earrings
One of the most striking gold ornaments found in the Sahel (lower Sahara) are the earrings worn by the Fulani women of southern Mali. Gold is melted into a foarm of a square rod which is marked down the center of each side, from this mark it is repeatedly heated and hammered into its four blades and then twisted into shape. These gold earrings could reach a weight of 300 grams each, a pair this large would be the ultimate sign of wealth. The Fulani name for these earrings is kwottenai kange. The Fulani or Peul are a traditionally nomadic people of traders and cattle herders who live throughout W. Africa. Many have now settled to a life of farming although some still continue to follow their most prized possessions (cattle) seasonally in search of pasture. The Fulani are very proud of their appearance and place great emphasis on their adornments. Altrove proposed reinterpretations, silver or gold plated - Brass,of these beautiful traditional jewels. Altrove's earrings are handcrafted by the finest Fulani craftsmen in Mali, each piece is unique and is the result of a long work of hammering and not a mold-cast. |
